Discovery
Highly qualified Maintenance and Construction (M&C) employees are paramount to the smooth operation of Northern California’s gas indth ustry. M&C employees are promoted to new roles with little to no leadership skills in terms of managing a team of employees and interfacing with the public. They face complex, daily challenges: navigating internal and external standards, coordinating with dozens of specialized design teams, and maintaining flawless designs that ensure field personnel safely return home to their families each night. One area that proves to be exceptionally challenging begins at the onset of their career: onboarding and training up to highly specialized design tasks.
Business Need
Our client faced challenges when onboarding new maintenance and construction employees and found that current training lacked consistency and structure.
The client needed help designing a program that would methodically initiate 50+ new maintenance and construction employees to the work in a way that wasn’t overwhelming and that would provide consistent support for the employees’ professional development at the company.
Learning Solutions
We wanted to attack the harrowed “90 degree learning curve” by implementing a scaffolded, 4-phase training program that aligned with the following goals:
Develop scaffolded design engineering courses that contextualize learning objectives through immediate, hands-on practice.
Implement an integrated approach to onboarding.
Provide a robust mentorship program that would ensure successful coaching experiences.
Create trackable, on-the-job training activities that expand on course content.
